Lakshmi Vilas Bank signs MoU with TCS for centralization of process

Mumbai, May 11, 2012:

 Lakshmi Vilas Bank, the leading, fast-growing Private Sector Bank today signed a MoU with TCS for centralization of back office operations and document management system.

This arrangement would facilitate centralization of the key processes like account opening, KYC compliance, loans and advances, Trade Finance, ATM card management and many more. This agreement would enable all the branches of the bank to collect applications or request forms from customers and forward them to Central Processing Cell (CPC) for processing. CPC (Central Processing Cell) will be responsible for all centralized business processes and Datacenter (DC) will provide and maintain IT related services like servers, data storage, network etc. The documents comprising of application forms and supporting documents collected at branches will be forwarded to the scan station for scanning and indexing. Primarily the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) will be deployed for data and document management.

The entire process would be implemented in two phases. Phase I would include the processes like Savings Account Opening, Current Account Opening, CC-OD/ Loan Account Opening (Post Sanction), Centralization of account opening under Financial Inclusion and more. Phase II will include Trade Finance, Opening Demat Accounts and 3 in 1 Accounts

Speaking on the occasion Mr. P.R. Somasundaram, MD & CEO, Lakshmi Vilas Bank said, “Centralisation is a natural and significant step in our journey towards leveraging technology for providing a faster, efficient and standardized service without, of course, losing our traditional ‘personal touch’ through our fairly large network.  We were looking for a technology partner who could bring in a banking-specific solution to the table to centralize the bank’s back office operations and document management system. This tie-up will assist the Bank in providing a single platform that can be used for centralizing all the processes.”

IIT-M aims at 2,000 Ph.Ds

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) plans to increase the number of Ph.Ds to 2,000 in five years.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director of the institute, said the institute had always focussed on developing research output, including students and faculty.

“We hade always wanted to increase Ph.D intake in this institute and the committee headed by former atomic energy commission (AEC) chairman Anil Kakodkar too reiterated it” he said.

Kakodkar committee recommended that IITs be rebranded as primary research institutes and increase PhD students from less than 1, 000 students to 10,000 by 2020-25, and the number of IITs from 15 to 20.

Prof. Ramamurthi said last year IIT-M admitted 300 students for the Ph.D programme but this year they had increased the number to 400 to produce 2,000 doctorates in five years.

 

“In the next few years we will increase our annual Ph.D intake to 700 per year provided we recruit more faculty to have 700 faculty on campus,” he added.

When asked about the institute’s plan for physical expansion, the director said last year the institute framed a master plan, according to which the institute could construct additional buildings in the remaining six acres.

“If the government wants us to increase student enrolment by another 50 per cent we need more land. Also for doing bigger projects we need more land,” he added.

With upgrades, India to reopen 3 vaccine plants

HLL, a company that made its name in condom manufacturing, has contract for work

An Indian company known for making condoms has completed upgrades on a vaccine plant there and is nearing completion on two others.

It has only recently been disclosed that HLL Lifecare, formerly Hindustan Latex, has been overseeing the work, reports rediff business, a disclosure it says has been a surprise to some. HLL still makes condoms but also operates hospital chains, diagnostic clinics and MRI centers in India.

The plants all had their licenses pulled in 2008 because of quality problems, leading to a shortage of some vaccines at the time, according to in-PharmaTechnologist.

The government is investing about $37 million in the project. That is about half the cost of the upgrades at the Central Research Institute in Kasauli, the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin Vaccine Laboratory in Guindy, and the Pasteur Institute of India, in Coonoor, rediff reports. Additional funds will come from institutional investors. And while government-owned facilities usually stick to common vaccines like DPT, the plan is for the reopened plants to manufacture a variety of vaccines, including those for hepatitis B, influenza. and rabies.

While strides have been made in recent years in the development and manufacturing of vaccines, the world continues to have huge unmet needs in many areas.

Ulster Academic to Lead £10 Million India-UK ICT Research Collaboration

A University of Ulster academic is spearheading the latest phase of a multi-million pound joint UK and Indian research project to boost India’s Internet capabilities.Professor Gerard Parr, who is Chair in Telecommunications Engineering on the University’s Coleraine campus, is the UK’s principal investigator for a £10 million India-UK ICT research consortium of nine research-leading UK universities.The £10 million project – the largest between the two countries and which will employ 200 scientists – will help improve the quality of millions of lives in India and the UK.UK’s Minister for Universities and Science David Willetts announced the £10 million funding boost for the project during a meeting with Indian Science and Technology Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh in London today (Wednesday April 18).

The £10 million investment will support the second phase of research into next generation Telecommunications networks – the development of state-of-the-art platforms and applications that will carry voice, video and data in the future on the Internet.

The research is a key part of the work of the India-UK Advanced Technology Centre (IU-ATC), a collaborative programme funded by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Government of India’s Department of Science & Technology (DST) and industrial partners in both countries.

The funding announcement came after months of hard work leading up to a joint panel meeting of UK and Indian scientific experts, co-ordinated by Research Councils UK (RCUK) India, a representative office for EPSRC in India.

On behalf of EPSRC, RCUK India has been working with DST, since the start of the first phase of this collaborative project in 2009. This latest funding will allow the Centre to focus its efforts on developing low-cost solutions for rural access to broadband, improved use of available spectrum as well as applications for rural health monitoring, emergency and disaster communications, social TV-Virtual Classrooms and other services.

Professor Parr, who is based in the School of Computing and Information Engineering in the Faculty of Computing and Engineering at Ulster’s Coleraine campus and Professor Ashok Jhunjhunwala from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras are the UK and Indian principal investigators for this major joint research initiative, the ultimate aim of which is to develop solutions that will benefit the lives of millions of users in the future Digital Economy.

Welcoming the funding success Professor Parr said: “I am delighted that EPSRC and DST have given our team the opportunity to further develop our plans and focus our efforts in order to derive maximum impact and benefit from our research activities.

“This is a very significan initiative representing over £20 million of investment from government, industry and academic partners in both countries for both phases.  We intend to work closely with our funders and industry to ensure we fully exploit the promise of technological advances in Next Generation Networks.  The IU-ATC represents an internationally renowned research and innovation eco-system which we intend to grow over the coming years.”

Ulster is the lead UK institution in a consortium of nine research-leading UK universities including the University of Surrey, Lancaster University, Queen Mary, University of London, Southampton University, University of St Andrews, University College London, University of Bristol, and the University of Cambridge.

They are joined by seven top Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India: IIT Madras (Lead), IIT Delhi, IIT Mumbai, IIT Mandi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, and IISc Bangalore.

In recent years, Ulster academics have responded to the growing global demand for affordable and energy efficient broadband applications and services by researching new technologies to meet the needs of the emerging digital economy in the UK and India. Such solutions will also apply to other countries such as Brazil, China and the Middle East, said Professor Parr.

Announcing details of the funding boost at the high-level  India-UK Ministerial Science and Innovation Council, David Willetts said: “This £10 million investment will build on the UK’s excellent record of research collaboration with India. It will bring together leading universities and institutes from both countries to develop technological solutions to a range of important issues, from rural health to disaster response.”

Dr Liam Blackwell, Head of EPSRC’s ICT Theme said: “This next phase of the India-UK Advanced Technology Centre project is expected to contribute to leading edge international collaboration in ICT research which will benefit both countries and develop their capabilities.” The three high level research activity areas within the IU-ATC are:-

  • Applications and Services;
  • Core Network Systems and Protocols;
  • Heterogeneous Wireless Access Networks;

Each research area has a UK-India Chief Monitor that reports to an Executive Board. Additionally, a group of major ICT companies in both countries will collaborate with the consortium on the research agenda.

Lead UK industrial partner, BT Innovate and Design, is joined by Toshiba Research Laboratories Europe. In India there is direct engagement from companies such as Infosys, Wipro and Sasken together with SMEs.

The first phase of the joint research initiative started in June 2009 with £5 million funding from EPSRC-DST and £4.2 million co-funding from industry and academic partners in both countries.

During this phase methods and templates for collaboration, governance agreements and Intellectual Property Rights management frameworks have been adopted by EPSRC, the British Council and the Intellectual Property Office of the UK Government. Significant outputs have already been generated by the team in terms of scientific publications, technology demonstrators and patents.

Turning a new leaf, thanks to NGO’s helping hand

After doctors treated his psychotic disorder, Palraj is a different man today

He was quite a familiar face for regulars at a tea shop on the Thanjavur Road in the city. With unkempt hair, dusty beard and soiled clothes, the haggard youth hung around the shop, mostly in the late evenings, mumbling incoherently and frequently slapping himself on the face in self-admonishment.

Though some instinctively recoiled at his sight, he never harmed anyone.

He did not beg either – content with the occasional tea and food offered by some kind-hearted soul. A typical wandering mentally ill (WMI) person, S.Palraj (29) of Gandhi Market was mostly ignored by passers-by.

But, today not many would recognise the clean shaven and smiling Palraj as he goes about his work as a ‘substitute’ loadman at the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation godown or at the shops in the vicinity of his previous hangout.

Palraj was lucky to have been spotted a few months ago by Venkatesa Prasad, a former social worker, who took him to Anbalayam, a city-based voluntary organisation which runs a government-approved psychiatric rehabilitation home for the mentally ill in the city.

After four months at the home where doctors of ATHMA Institute of Mental Health and Social Sciences treated his psychotic disorder, Palraj is a different man today.

Though he seems to remember his days on the streets, he brushes aside the trauma. “It was just for a few months. I was in shock as my mother disappeared from home after my brother died in a road accident. She was devastated to find him dead on the road and disappeared soon after. I was worried that she too could have met with an accident,” he explains.

A Standard IX dropout, Palraj, who lost his father about 10 years ago, has been doing odd jobs, working as an assistant in a lottery shop and a load man earlier. His only aspiration now is to secure a “token” as a regular load man at the TNCSC godown.

“Palraj’s case just goes to show that many of the WMIs that we find on the streets can be rehabilitated and mainstreamed with the society,” says T.K.S.Senthil Kumar, founder, Anbalayam.

Anbalayam volunteers fan out to provide lunch, provided by sponsors, to quite a few WMIs in the city every day.

TN inching further to match State in software exports

Software exports from the state of Tamil Nadu to witness a growth of 17 per cent in 2011-12, by reporting around Rs 48,000 crore exports as compared to Rs 42,100 crore, a year ago. The industry added 60,000 people during the fiscal. While the industry is cheering up about the growth, representatives from the industry are also worried about infrastructure issue, mainly lack of electricity.

O Panneerselvam, minister for finance, Tamil Nadu said that the challenge before the government is to sustain this momentum and also to spur growth in untapped sectors like hardware development. Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (ELCOT), a state government promotional agency for IT industries, has promoted special economic zones called ELCOSEZ at Chennai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Madurai, Thirunelvei, Salem and Hosur. “We will take all steps to attract entrepreneurs to occupy the available space in ELCOSEZs and in the IT parks at Trichy, Madurai and Thirunelvei. We also proposed to have incubation and training centres exclusively for small and medium industries in such spaces”.

The sector currently employs around 3,50,000 people, making it as second largest IT cluster in the country. While the industry is cheering up the growth, the major challenge is power cut which is around four hours in a day in Chennai, and 6-12 hours in smaller cities and towns and there is also a compulsory power holiday on Tuesdays and Sundays. Industry sources says this means companies have to incur additional cost for power, due to the usage of generators.

“While cost of the power from the grid is around Rs 4 a unit, now the companies have to shell out Rs 13-15 per unit since we have to use diesel generators,” said a senior administration manager from one of the top IT companies.

K Purushothaman, regional director, NASSCOM says “its real pain in running our process day in and day out which is a 24ô7 working industry. There are 312 hrs of power cuts in a month,” he added.

4,294 gallstones removed from bladder of 63-year old man

Erode (TN), Apr 1 (PTI)

A surgeon at a private hospital here has claimed to have bettered a Guinness Record by removing a whopping 4,294 gallstones totally weighing 300 grams from the bladder of a 63-year old man. The laparascopic surgery was performed recently on Duraisamy, a retired Village Administrative Officer, who had complaints of back pain. A scan revealed the presence of gallstones in the bladder and the patient was advised to go for surgery during which 4,294 small gallstones were removed, Dr T K Swamy said. The patient is keeping good health now.

Swamy claimed removal of 4,294 stones from the bladder was a Guinness record. Earlier, in Germany 3,110 stones were removed from the bladder of a woman. He said he would approach Guinness Records for entry of his feat.

Nurturing Nanotechnology

Over 200 researchers and students from various universities  across the country had an opportunity to interact with eminent scientists on the subjects of nanomaterials during a national seminar on ‘Indigenous Nanomaterials Development for Industrial Applications (INDIA)’ organised by and held at the Centre for Nanoscience and Technology, Anna University, on February 27 and 28. The meet was inaugurated by Dr A B Mandal, director, Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai, was presided over by Dr P Mannar Jawahar, vice-chancellor, Anna University and felicitated by Dr P Kaliraj, dean, A C Tech Campus, Anna University. Dr R Jayavel, director, Centre for Nanoscience and Technology, Anna University, welcomed the gathering.

The University has been actively engaged in conducting diverse projects and research initiatives in the field of nanoscience for the last 10 years with financial assistance of about      `20 crore from various institutions. This meeting was a part of its nanoscience initiative that proved to be a platform for       students to showcase their research ideas.

Scientists from the industrial  sector and research institutions, including IIT, IISC, IIBAT, University of Madras and Dublin City University, Ireland, spoke at the meet. The morning session had lectures by scientists from industries such Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Resil Chemicals, on the industrial applications of nanosciences and technology.

Separate sessions were allotted for oral and poster presentations by students and researchers. S Weslen Vedakumari, junior research fellow, Bioproducts Lab, Central Leather Research Institute, bagged the first prize in oral presentation while Vijaya Prakash, scientist, Frontier Lifeline Pvt Ltd, Dr K M Cherian Heart Foundation, won the second prize.

In the poster presentation D Durgalakshmi, PhD, National Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, University of Madras, was the winner while the second place was shared by Shravan Kumar and Balaji Vengatesh, final year students of Rajalakshmi Institute of Technology. The conference came to a conclusion with a lively interactive session.

Documentary for awareness on biogas

Chennai:

In a bid to generate awareness about biogas in rural areas, a documentary film, ‘Energy Independence’ was released here on Wednesday.

The initiative, undertaken by department of nongovernmental organisation (NGO) management, Madras School of Social Work (MSSW) and NSS Empanelled Training Institute, was to promote awareness on sustainable energy in rural areas.

The 18-minute documentary, which was screened after an inaugural ceremony by Dr S Krishnaswamy, founder and managing director of Krishnaswamy Associates, was aimed at promoting biogas in villages, said D K Harish, a student of MSSW who directed the documentary.

The film was shot at Alathur village in Tiruvanmiyur and Marakanam village.

He said biogas in the villages had created energy independence.

“Earlier, the villages used steel-based system to generate gas, which was a costlier experience. Now, with emerging technology, they are using a fibre reinforced plant, which doesn’t require maintenance, said director of corporate social responsibility of Orchid Chemicals, C Mani.

Mani added that biogas was not successful previously because the government’s focus was on liquefied petroleum gas, which was not sustainable in the long run. He said demand for biogas is increasing now as it is cheaper. “Even many buildings in Chennai are opting for biogas in their complexes,” he said.

Fatima Vasanth, principal and secretary of Madras School of Social Work, said that biogas is an alternative energy and students in collaboration with NSS will spread awareness in villages by holding special camps.

SunEdison’s 100-kW unit rises on StanChart rooftop

Chennai, MARCH 19:

SunEdision has put up a 100-kW solar plant on roof of building of Scope International in Chennai. Scope is Standard Chartered Bank’s captive BPO and its headquarters is in Chennai.

Spread over 20,000 sq ft of roof space, the plant uses 875 solar panels and will generate 3 million units of electricity over the next 20 years, enough to power 40 average Indian homes annually.

This is the first commercial rooftop solar project, SunEdison India’s Managing Director, Mr Pasupathy Gopalan, said on Monday, meaning that the Scope building will consume the energy produced on its rooftop, paying a price for it. SunEdison has not disclosed the price, but said it was the first commercial PPA rooftop in the country.

The entire project was completed in three months. SunEdison is in talks with other prospects for similar rooftop projects.
